Before the Constitution, India was governed according to the document called Government of India Act (1935). There is an important reason why January 26 was chosen as the Republic Day of India. It was on this day in the year 1930 that the Declaration of Indian Independence called Purna Swaraj was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress. It formed India’s stand in opposition to the Dominion status offered by the British Regime. Republic Day therefore is a day of pride for Indians as it reminds them of the long freedom movement which led to India’s independence in 1947
